An introduction into dressmaking – this course will enable you to make your own clothes by explaining and demonstrating pattern construction and fabric choice. The course will support you as you cut, sew and fit your own individual garment!
This course will introduce you to the basics of garment construction. It covers getting to grips with a sewing machine, basic sewing skills and advice on equipment needed to start your own projects. Learn how to select and accurately cut a pattern, as well as how to choose an appropriate fabric. You will learn essential dressmaking techniques such as finishing seams, how to set a sleeve, how to hem a skirt/dress, how to alter the garment to get a unique fit and how to finish your work to a high quality standard. This course will also cover how to alter patterns to incorporate design features, allowing you to make the clothes you’ve always dreamt of finding in your size and in an affordable way.

Design LAB - Silver Arts Award Programme 2018
Arts Award Programme at Manchester School of Art
Design LAB at Marketplace studios in Stockport is a 16 session programme run by Manchester School Art, Manchester Metropolitan University. Throughout this programme, pupils will work towards gaining an Arts Award Silver qualification, a nationally accredited award. Supported by our accredited assessors, staff, students and tutors from Manchester School of art you will get to work with practicing artists to develop your skills and earn a Silver Arts Award qualification. Tutors will enable you to develop a project of personal interest and enable your creative development in the lead up to an exciting external event. All this takes place in the School of Art's professional Studio project space in Stockport, an operational studio and gallery space, thriving with creative graduates and small businesses. This programme will allow you to achieve your creative goals in preparation for further education or employment alongside making new friends and having fun.
Once completed, the Silver Arts Award obtained can be turned into Gold beginning at our Design LAB Summer School in August 2018. Gold Award carries UCAS points, which will support applications to HE as well as helping to build a vibrant CV.
This course will enable you to build upon basic sewing and dressmaking skills and take your designs further! Looking at different shapes and design features, you will learn how to draft a basic pattern block and adapt it to your own design.
This course will look at the design features of clothing to enable you to turn basic garments into special pieces and adapt patterns to incorporate the features that you want.
This includes different types of collars and cuffs, different sleeve shapes (such as puff, peasant, bell and bishop), skirt shapes (including godets, frills, A-Line, pencil and pleats), different types of darts in tops and widening/tapering trousers.
You will also have the opportunity to draft a pattern block of either a blouse, skirt or trousers from your own measurements.
