Course Information

Advanced Visual Methods Summer School (sept 17)

What is this workshop about?
The summer school will provide practical and hands on experience of a range of visual methods that participants can apply or adapt to suit their own research. The module will provide in depth training on 1) visual theories 2) visual methods of data collection and 3) visual representation. Taking an explicitly cross-disciplinary approach, students will draw on thinking and methodologies from within social sciences, arts and humanities, and visual industries more widely, to think about the nature of the visual and its relationship to knowledge.

This year the overall theme considers visual and experimental methods for a post-binary future. For centuries, social scientists, artists and designers have theorised and created means for studying, analysing and representing ontological and epistemological beliefs. In the current period of rapid change and uncertainty, and simultaneously increased access to physical and digital materials, there are increased possibilities for innovation within visual research. At the same time there is a need to think far into the future, to understand how a new generation of SOCIAL-CREATIVE SCIENTISTS will study, analyse and represent aspects of the world in an era beyond ‘post-truth’. This extends on techniques and ideas shared in last two year’s summer schools making it suitable for students to attend again and experience new content or for new members to join us.
